Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin layers of porcelain your dentist places over your teeth to instantly transform the appearance of your smile. These wafer-thin porcelain shells are durable, stain-resistant, and can match the shade of your surrounding teeth. You can add a veneer to a single tooth, or you can transform the full visible portion of your smile by placing veneers on multiple teeth.

If you want whiter teeth to match your veneer, you can ask for Zoom whitening prior to installing the veneer, to give your whole smile an upgrade.

If any of the below rob you of your confidence in your smile, veneers are a great solution:

  • Gaps
  • Chips
  • Stains
  • Discoloration
  • Decay

Veneers are an excellent way to restore a straighter, more brilliant smile, and can deliver whiter teeth than most teeth whitening services. They are also an alternative to crowns or invasive procedures, in some cases.

Are veneers right for me?

If you’re not satisfied with the appearance of your teeth, the first step is to schedule a teeth cleaning and routine dental exam at McCormack Dental Group. After your dentist examines your teeth and gums and analyzes the overall health of your teeth, they can help you determine the best course of action to improve your smile.

McCormack Dental Group tailors treatment plans to the specific needs and goals of each patient, and your dentist can tell you the advantages and side effects of all the options available to you, including veneers.

What is it like to get veneers?

To ensure your veneers fit and blend in perfectly, you likely need to make several visits to the dentist. Your dentist needs to take X-rays or CBCT scans to examine the underlying health of your teeth and gums. If they find any sign of gum disease or other problems, you will need treatment before receiving veneers.

To prepare your teeth for veneers, your dentist reshapes the tooth or teeth receiving the veneers, shaving the enamel very slightly so that there’s room for the veneer to sit on top. Once the tooth is ready, they take an impression or model, so that the dental laboratory can create a perfect fitting veneer. It typically takes 1-2 weeks to make the veneer, so you may wear a temporary veneer in the meantime.

When your veneer is ready, your dentist checks the fit over your tooth, trimming the veneer as necessary, and makes sure the shade matches your surrounding teeth. They then bond the veneer directly to your tooth with cement, which hardens quickly under a special light.

Finally, your dentist removes any excess dental cement and makes any final adjustments. You likely need to return for a follow-up visit to ensure your veneer remains securely fixed to your tooth and fits comfortably in your mouth.
